One of the most interesting studies I’ve ever come across is how lottery winners, a year after hitting the jackpot, rarely describe themselves as happier. Other studies have shown that television, with it’s Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous images beamed right into our living rooms, has greatly increased American status anxiety and financial insecurity. After recently watching Ocean’s 12 & 13, what struck me most was my desire to buy nice shoes. It was embarrassing, actually. Fighting that materialistic urge is a daily battle, but so important. Lots of work to do here.
